Probably no other physical feature calls for a correction, as much as some elapsed ears make.
Especially children are victims of this problem by drawing raw nicknames such as Dumbo or Mickey Mouse.
These children are ideal candidates for otoplasty.
This surgery can be done at any age but with the condition that the ears have reached maximum development (5 or 6 years old). In order to avoid loss of self-confidence or social inadequacy, it is preferable to resolve it before starting the first year of school.
Otoplasty surgery consists of practicing an incision just behind the ear, in the natural crease formed by the junction of the head with the ear. The esthetician will then remove the necessary amount of skin and cartilage to get the desired effect. In some cases the surgeon will cut the cartilage by remodeling it in a form as close as possible to the natural appearance, fixing the cartilage in this position with a permanent suture.
There are situations where it is not necessary to remove cartilage, using other remodeling techniques and ear fixation in the desired shape.
Changing the shape of the ear will not affect hearing at all.
Remodeling of the ear provides great patient satisfaction by helping them to regain self-confidence and to get rid of inhibitions by giving them a normal life.
Generally, and especially in children, it is preferable for the surgery to be performed under general anesthesia.
Post-operative recovery is of medium duration, with no special problems. A slight dressing will be applied behind the ear for a few days, and it is recommended to wear a compression bandage to keep the ears in place for a period of about 2 weeks after surgery.
The risks of this surgery are minimal, meaning infections (very rare), cumbersome healing, or the possibility of recurrence of deformity. Normally, after healing, there will only be a fine scar behind the ear, even if it is hidden in the skin fold.
Any other postoperative complication, other than those mentioned above, should be brought to the attention of the esthetician in the shortest possible time.
